Curling gold medalist coming to Fort McMurray

It’s not every day you get an opportunity to get free tips and advice from an Olympic gold medalist.
John Morris – the third for Kevin Martin’s 2010 gold medal winning team and a successful skip in his own right – is coming to the Oilsands Curling Club Oct. 13 at MacDonald Island Park for the club’s open house and a VIP reception later that night.
The free open house will run from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. with Morris attending from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. It’s a rare opportunity to try out the sport of curling for free and get some tips from one of the most successful curlers in the world.
“He’s a two-time world junior curling champion, he’s won an Olympic gold medal, he’s won Briers, so we thought who better than John Morris to promote our club or our upcoming juniors?” said club president Tyler Spitzer.
“I think just the Olympics alone have a lot of appeal and he’ll have his gold medal with him. Winning a gold medal in any sport is a great accomplishment and those who come will get the chance to meet someone who has one.”
Morris has one of the best resumés in the sport of curling with nine grand slam victories, a world curling championship, two Brier championships as well as the aforementioned Olympic gold medal win in Vancouver.
Curling is one of the fastest growing winter sports in Canada and is accessible for all ages. The Oilsands Curling Club’s open house is a free opportunity to try the sport in a no-pressure environment while learning the basics from experienced curlers.
In addition to helping with the open house, Morris will be promoting the 2013 M&M Meat shops Canadian Junior Championships, which will be held at Mac Island early next year, bringing the best young curlers in the country to Fort McMurray. Morris is a two-time Canadian junior champion himself and the Oilsands Curling Club is hoping he will help draw young curlers to the open house.
The club will also be hosting a VIP reception with Morris in the Miskanaw Ballroom. Tickets will be available to the semi-formal cocktail event through the curling club office.
REACHING OUT
Bringing in a world-renowned curler like Morris is only one way that the Oilsands Club is trying to increase their membership this year.
“I think it’s fair to say we’re trying to increase our visibility this season, with John coming to our open house and having the Juniors we really want to let the community know more about us and hopefully attract new members,” said Spitzer.
The club has launched a brand new corporate league, which will play six-end games on Wednesday nights from 7 to 9 p.m. The club likes to promote the new league as being similar to a winter version of golf as a chance to network and have friendly competition between businesses. No experience in the sport is necessary.
The Oilsands Curling Club will also be a part of this weekend’s Fall Trade Show at Mac Island to spread awareness of the club and the benefits of the sport. This will be the first time fans will have a chance to buy full passes to the Canadian Junior Championships. The club will also be accepting registration and answering questions about the game.
